Jiffy Pop
is a commercial brand name for a specific product. However it is a common household term for all similar products. Originally patented in 1954, its a thin aluminum dish with a handle and a unique expanding aluminum top, and like the newer Microwave Popcorn comes with corn and oil as a complete package. It is cooked like Kettle Corn, but over any heat source including open fire. The stirring action comes from the way the preparer continually moves the dish in a circular pattern. As the corn pops it forces the top to expand into a dome. The thin aluminum dish cools quickly, and the top simply tears becoming the serving dish. At the time US patents only lived for 17 years, and the Patent expired in 1971 so today there are many manufactures producing simular containers.
